Homemade Tooth Powder Without Baking Soda: Natural, Remineralizing Recipe

All-Natural Tooth Powder with Calcium Carbonate and Bentonite Clay (Baking Soda-Free)

You’ve likely heard of using baking soda to brush your teeth. And while it may do a great job, I personally can not handle the taste of baking soda. Some also find it’s abrasiveness can be hard on their gums. So, when I wanted to start using a homemade natural toothpaste or tooth powder, a must have for me was for it to be baking soda free.

Not only is this tooth powder a great alternative to a baking soda toothpaste, in my opinion it works better as well. It’s packed with mineral filled ingredients that help to naturally balance the acids in your mouth, and naturally remineralize your teeth.

In this post, you’ll learn how to make tooth powder with bentonite clay and calcium carbonate.

This is a powder form as I find it stores better this way, and also I don’t have to worry about coconut oil clogging my drain (which can be used to give a DIY toothpaste more of a ‘toothpaste’ texture).

That said, if you’d prefer a toothpaste vs a tooth powder, simply mix a small amount of fractionated/liquid coconut oil into the powder until you achieve the texture you are looking for.

What Is Wrong With Conventional Toothpaste?

Many commercial toothpastes contain questionable ingredients that can do more harm than good. Common additives like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can irritate sensitive mouths, while artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and synthetic flavorings offer no real health benefit. In fact, they are terrible for your health.

Fluoride, though helpful in small doses, is often overused and can pose risks if ingested.

Even “whitening” pastes rely on harsh abrasives or chemicals like triclosan, which disrupts hormones and has been banned in some countries.

So as you can see, many of the ‘ingredients’ in commercial toothpaste can be very toxic.

Switching to a natural tooth powder lets you avoid these ingredients while still supporting great oral health with clean, remineralizing options. Personally, I find that since using this tooth powder, along with my all-natural mouthwash, my mouth has never felt better.

Baking Soda Free Tooth Powder Ingredients

This simple diy tooth powder couldn’t be easier to whip together.

Calcium Carbonate (4 tbsp)

Calcium carbonate is a gentle abrasive that helps remove surface stains and plaque without damaging tooth enamel. It’s also rich in calcium, which can support tooth remineralization and strengthen enamel, promoting long-term oral health.

It also helps neutralize acids in the mouth (similar to what baking soda does in a toothpaste), which is the primary cause of cavities. This helps restore a balanced pH level and prevents tooth enamel erosion and decay.

Bentonite Clay (2 tbsp)

Bentonite clay is known for its detoxifying properties—it naturally has a negative charge and attracts positively charged bacteria and toxins, acting like a sponge to help cleanse the mouth. It’s also alkaline, so it works along with the calcium carbonate to balance oral pH. In addition it provides minerals such as calcium and magnesium that support strengthening enamel and reducing sensitivity.

Some studies also suggest that bentonite clay has antibacterial properties that may help with conditions like gingivitis.

Xylitol (2 1/2 tbsp)

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that not only adds a pleasant taste but also helps fight cavity-causing bacteria. It disrupts harmful bacteria’s ability to stick to teeth and lowers acidity levels in the mouth, helping protect against decay.

It’s a sweetener you don’t want to leave out when it comes to oral care!

Mineral Sea Salt (1 tsp)

Fine mineral sea salt is rich in trace minerals and offers mild antibacterial properties. It helps neutralize oral bacteria, support gum health, and stimulate saliva production, which is essential for naturally cleansing the mouth and remineralizing enamel.

Remember how we are always told to do a salt water rinse to get rid of inflammation and infections in our mouth? Adding it to your tooth powder means you are providing your mouth with those antibacterial properties with every brush, reducing your risk of infections.

Fresh Powdered Mint (1 1/2 tbsp)

If you have peppermint leaves from your garden, that is the best! But you have to buy the herb at a health food store, that works as well. Peppermint or Spearmint powder adds a refreshing flavor and mild antibacterial benefits. It creates a cooling, cleansing sensation, improving the brushing experience while supporting fresh breath and reducing oral bacteria naturally.

Ground Sage (1 1/2 tbsp)

Sage is a traditional herbal whitening agent with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s gentle on enamel and helps keep gums healthy while offering a mild, natural whitening effect to brighten your smile over time.

Why This Recipe Works

This homemade tooth powder combines gentle abrasives, natural detoxifiers, and plant-based ingredients to create an effective, baking-soda-free oral care solution.

The calcium carbonate and bentonite clay work together to polish teeth, remove plaque, neutralize mouth acids that can lead to decay, and support enamel remineralization.

Xylitol and mineral sea salt help control harmful bacteria, while mint and sage add refreshing flavour and herbal whitening benefits.

With no synthetic additives, foaming agents, or harsh chemicals, this recipe cleans teeth naturally and gently—perfect for sensitive mouths and those seeking a low-tox, eco-friendly alternative to conventional toothpaste.

Don’t forget to always use a antibacterial mouthwash after brushing your teeth! For an amazing mouthwash, check out my Clove, Cinnamon and Tulsi Mouthwash recipe coming soon.

You will love it! Your gums will never feel better, and it naturally gets rid of bad breath. It works amazing at preventing plaque and gingivitis, and helping to stop cavities.

Storage Tips:

  • Store in a dry, airtight container.
  • Keep it in a cool, dark place, away from humidity.
  • Use a small scoop or spoon to avoid moisture getting in (avoid wet toothbrushes dipping into the powder).

If the powder clumps over time (due to humidity), just stir or shake it—it’s still usable. It’s a safe, fuss-free, low-maintenance recipe.

Sharing with Family Tip:

Make a disinfecting spray for your toothbrush to avoid spreading germs, or introducing bacteria into the tooth powder.

It’s simple to do! In a small spray bottle, fill it half way with a 3% hydrogen peroxide and the other half with distilled water. Spray your tooth brush BEFORE and AFTER brushing your teeth. Especially after you are done brushing! By spraying your toothbrush, and letting the hydrogen peroxide completely dry, it will kill any bacteria left behind and avoid transferring them to the tooth powder or your family members.
